I had high hopes for Salzburg but mostly let me down when I got there. I had seen so many photos online about how beautiful the city was so I had really high expectations when I got there. Well the hostel I booked was in what you would consider new town and all of the beautiful stuff was in the old town. It wasn’t so bad though because of easy-to-use public transportation. I basically just needed to take the bus into the old town each day which was simple enough.
But when I got to the old town I realized just how small the area actually was. The old town is where all of the photos are taken you see online. If you have seen any travel shows that have gone to Salzburg they are exclusively found in this area because outside of this area is just a normal city.
I will say though that this old part of the city is as beautiful as they say is. It does in fact look just like the photos and TV shows that you see. Because I was there it around Christmas it was even better because the area was decorated for the holidays which just added to the experience. But really the area is quite small, you can see just about all of it in about two days. So it would be great for a quick stop before moving on to your next destination. But I don’t think I could stay there for very long.
I think I stayed in the city for four days, two of which I used to explore the old city and the other two were spent reading in the cafés. As I mentioned in my Vienna post Austria is famous for its coffee culture. You will see people stay in the coffee shops for hours at a time reading books and playing chess. So I had no problem drinking the wonderful coffee and finishing the novel that I was reading for the next two days.
